CHAPTER
TWENTY
DERGOZ
Guilt gnaws at me.
âI did the right thing,â I grumble, but Reif just shoots me a frown before jerking his head towards the hatch in the ground.
âI could not stand to see her hurt.â Surely she will understand that I acted out of care, out of concern. That I acted out of⦠love.
Still. I feel⦠ashamed. That I left her there, when she has proven she is capable.
I cannot stand to see her hurt on my mission.
Or for her to see what I truly am. A monster.
And with the knowledge that this is a forward operating base of the Roth, there is no doubt in my mind that I will have to be the Brute yet again, as distasteful as the idea is.
The sun beats down on my scales, warmth spreading along them as we make our way to the door that will lead to the underground operations base. According to Nydoâs intel, the base opens up to a cliffside, which allows for aircraft to come and go more stealthily, but makes for a single entrance and thus makes it harder for the base to be infiltrated, especially with the live camouflage barrier.
So far, we have met with no resistance, which is raising all kinds of internal alarm bells.
âThis is likely a trap,â I tell Reif as he reaches for the lever that will open the hatch.
âThat makes it all the more fun, donât you agree?â
I grunt. âThen it was a good idea I left my mate in the house, yes?â
âOh, no,â Reif says cheerily. âThat was sheer idiocy. The woman could be useful. I do not know much about their species, other than they successfully repelled a Roth invasion once, despite being severely underpowered. I do know that a mate should be an equal partner, however and you are definitely fucking that up quite well.â
âWhat do you know of mates?â
âI know enough to know that I would seek all the dark sides of every planet to find mine, and here you are, tying yours up and leaving her alone in a filthy hovel against her will.â
âYou should not sound so pleased about it.â
âWhy wouldnât I be? Perhaps the creature will decide to leave with me if you continue to treat her so poorly.â
I growl at him, my glare promising death. âFind your own human.â
âOh, I very much intend to, now that I have met one in face-to-face. Though I would much prefer meeting her body-to-body.â
I round on him, fury rising in me. âShe is mine. I wed her in a time-honored Suevan ceremony.â
âShe did not bear your mated scent,â Reif says casually, as if he does not care that I am a moment away from slicing his face off. Or ripping his spine off. Perhaps I will do both.
âThere is no reason to look murderous, old friend.â
âI am not your friend, and the human female is mine.â
âThen why is tied up in a shed when she repeatedly told you not to do that? Kidnapping a mate is a beloved Arco tradition, but I do not think your female would like that.
